In September, 2010 a congressional hearing was held regarding the national increase of Salmonella poisoning from eggs consumption. From May 1st to September 14th there have been a total of 2,752 reported cases, 1,608 more than expected based on the average of reported cases during the same time frame over the last five years. In August, several companies conducted a nationwide voluntary recall of their eggs, a list of which can be found at the following link.
Some quick tips:
– Discard any suspect eggs, as well as those that are cracked or dirty
– keep eggs refrigerated at all times
