You may not be aware that credit agencies sell your contact information to credit card companies, insurance companies, mortgage brokers, and other businesses based on your credit profile. These companies turn around and send you offers in the mail. If you no longer wish the credit reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax, and Innovis) to sell your information to other businesses, you can choose to opt out.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, your decision to opt-out will have “no effect on your ability to apply for or obtain credit or insurance.” However, the FTC does state that certain offers are only made available via these pre-screened offers, so if you decide you want to re-enter the pre-screen pool, you can choose to opt back in.
